The Hikes

Every hike on this trip is worth it — here's everything you need to know and prep before lacing up.

🌅 Sunrise Hike · Day 2Hard

Ha Ling Peak

📍 Canmore — 5 min drive from home base

7.8 km
Round Trip
700 m
Elevation Gain
3–4 hrs
Duration
5 AM
Start Time

A Canmore classic with massive reward. The trail climbs steeply through forest before breaking out onto a rocky ridge with a 360° view over the Bow Valley, Three Sisters, and into Banff. Starting before dawn means you'll catch sunrise at the summit — one of the most memorable experiences in the Rockies.

⚙️ Pre-Hike Logistics

  • Set alarms for 4:30 AM — need time to dress, eat, and drive 5 min to trailhead
  • Pack bag the night before: headlamp, layers, snacks, 2L water per person
  • Trailhead at Spray Lakes Road, Canmore — free parking, fills fast on weekends
  • Sunrise June 19 ~5:30 AM — aim to summit 20 min before
  • Download AllTrails: Ha Ling Peak offline before bed
  • Rocky and steep near top — proper waterproof boots required, not runners
  • No Parks Canada pass needed (Canmore is outside the park boundary)

🎒 What to Bring

  • Headlamp (mandatory — dark on the way up)
  • Warm mid-layer + wind shell (summit is cold at 5 AM)
  • Gloves & toque — it's genuinely chilly at the top in June
  • 2L water + electrolytes
  • High-energy snacks (bars, nuts, fruit)
  • Camera or fully charged phone for the sunrise
  • Trekking poles (optional but helpful on descent)
🏔️ Day 3Moderate

Peyto Lake + Bow Summit Lookout

📍 Icefields Parkway, ~90 min from Canmore

3.4 km
Round Trip
100 m
Elevation Gain
1.5 hrs
Duration
2,088 m
Peak Elevation

Short but jaw-dropping. The Bow Summit Lookout reveals Peyto Lake glowing an impossible neon turquoise below — one of the most photogenic sights in the world, thanks to glacial rock flour suspended in the water. The full loop above the treeline offers panoramic alpine views in every direction.

⚙️ Pre-Hike Logistics

  • Leave Canmore by 7:30 AM — 90 min drive, worth the early start
  • Parking at Bow Summit lot — fills by 9 AM on weekends, arrive early
  • Parks Canada pass required — displayed in car window
  • Trail starts at upper parking lot, not the lower viewpoint
  • Cell service is spotty on Icefields Pkwy — download offline maps the night before

🎒 What to Bring

  • Windproof jacket (high altitude, exposed)
  • 1.5L water per person
  • Sunscreen — UV is intense at altitude
  • Packed lunch for the glacier picnic after
  • Binoculars (optional — great wildlife spotting on the Parkway)
🏞️ Day 4Easy–Moderate

Moraine Lake Rockpile Trail

📍 Moraine Lake Road, ~45 min from Canmore

0.8 km
Round Trip
60 m
Elevation Gain
20 min
Duration
1,884 m
Elevation

A short, steep scramble up a boulder pile that delivers the most iconic view in Canada — the Valley of the Ten Peaks reflected in Moraine Lake's electric blue water. Brief but absolutely unforgettable, and the perfect opener before the bigger hike of the day.

⚙️ Pre-Hike Logistics

  • ⚠️ Critical: Moraine Lake Road requires a Parks Canada shuttle reservation — book at reservation.pc.gc.ca weeks in advance, tickets sell out in minutes
  • Shuttle departs from Banff or Lake Louise — plan Canmore travel accordingly
  • Alternative if sold out: self-drive before 6 AM or bike in from Lake Louise (11 km)
  • No dogs allowed on the trail
  • Bears are very active in this valley — carry bear spray at all times

🎒 What to Bring

  • Bear spray (mandatory in this valley)
  • Comfortable trail shoes (boulders can be slippery)
  • Camera — the view is literally the entire point
  • Warm layers — the valley is cold in early morning
  • 1L water minimum
🏔️ Day 4 — OptionalHard

Plain of Six Glaciers Trail

📍 Lake Louise, ~50 min from Canmore

14.4 km
Round Trip
370 m
Elevation Gain
4–5 hrs
Duration
2,135 m
Peak Elevation

One of the finest hikes in the Canadian Rockies. Starting at Lake Louise, the trail winds above the lakeshore into a high alpine moraine directly below Victoria Glacier. The historic Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse is a perfect halfway reward. An absolute must if the group has the legs for it.

⚙️ Pre-Hike Logistics

  • Start from Lake Louise lakeshore parking — arrive by 8 AM before lots fill
  • Parks Canada pass required — at the gate entering Banff
  • Trail begins at the far end of the Lake Louise lakeshore walk
  • Teahouse is cash only and doesn't open early — bring your own lunch
  • Snow patches possible above teahouse in mid-June — microspikes may help
  • Check weather morning-of — exposed upper sections are dangerous in a storm
  • Leave a hike plan with someone back at the accommodation

🎒 What to Bring

  • 2.5L water per person
  • Full lunch + snacks (this is a long day)
  • Trekking poles (very helpful)
  • Bear spray
  • Waterproof boots — snow & wet sections likely
  • Rain jacket + warm layer
  • Cash for the teahouse — hot tea at 2,135m is pure bliss
  • First aid kit
